Helping Garden Grove School Musicians Get Started
In Garden Grove, many musicians pick up their first instrument at school. Here’s what the local music scene looks like:
- Grades 4 to 6
Garden Grove Unified invites 4th, 5th and 6th graders to join its elementary instrumental music program. Families apply through their school, and the district shares materials lists for beginning band and beginning strings.
- An award-winning district
Garden Grove Unified has 29 instrumental music teachers for grades 4 to 12. In May 2025, it received a Best Communities for Music Education award for the seventh year in a row.
- High school ensembles
At Garden Grove High, students can join the Argonaut Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Winter Drumline, and symphony, chamber and string orchestras.
- A landmark instrument
Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove is home to the Hazel Wright Organ. With more than 17,000 pipes, it is one of the largest pipe organs in the world.
A Quick Checklist for Garden Grove Parents
- Get your school’s materials list before you rent or buy anything.
- Ask the teacher which instrument your child will play. For violin, viola or cello, ask for the size too.
- Check your district. Most of Garden Grove attends Garden Grove Unified, but some neighborhoods are served by nearby districts with their own lists.
Irvine Art & Music is independent. We’re not an official vendor or partner of any school or district.
