This six-week songwriting course offers a guided journey for students to develop their own original songs from concept to completion. Each student will write their own song, receiving personal support and instruction on every aspect of the songwriting process from lyrics and structure to melody and harmony. The program is open to beginners and experienced musicians alike. While collaboration is encouraged, each students final song will reflect their individual creativity.

The class culminates in a public performance, giving students a chance to share their music with a real audience and possibly hear their songs performed by a live band or presented as a recorded track created during IAMCs Summer Recording Camp.

What's Included

All necessary tools for songwriting (such as notebooks, writing materials, and access to keyboards or MIDI controllers) will be provided. However, students must bring their own instruments (guitar, bass, etc.) if they wish to use them during class.

Skills Covered

  • Lyric writing and storytelling
  • Melody creation and vocal phrasing
  • Chord progressions and harmony
  • Song structure (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.)
  • Genre exploration and stylistic flexibility
  • Creative collaboration (where applicable)

Final Showcase

The program concludes with a public performance at Wahoo's Tacos at the Irvine Spectrum, giving students the opportunity to present their original songs in front of a live audience. When possible, their songs may be performed by one of the IAMC student bands or showcased through recordings made in collaboration with IAMC's Summer Recording Camp. This performance offers a meaningful and exciting goal to work toward while celebrating each student's creative growth.
